Deadlands: The Last Sons

Death on the Desert Plains
Session 6
  • The posse fought their way out of Dusky Jewel and made for their horses. Led by three of the infamous Seven (samurai working for Kang) on steam velocipedes. Our heroes quickly put some distance between themselves and the bulk of the men chasing them, but the samurai killed Agent McCoy during the chase.
  • Deandra was incapacitated just before she and Rodrigo were knocked from their horses. Kara rounded up the horses while Rodrigo turned and faced the remaining samurai. He killed them all.
  • Kara made camp and hid with the unconscious Deandra while Rodrigo raced back to Deadwood. He rushed past the Union barricade and found Mr. Speakman who went to find a doctor when he learned what had happened.
  • The senior agent returned with Doctor Palmer who recognized Rodrigo from their encounter several months before (Devil's Night Savage Tale). After the trouble with the Black Coachman, the doctor had moved to Deadwood where he hoped he could avoid trouble of the supernatural variety. Needless to say, he was hesitant to follow Rodrigo anywhere, but his vow as a doctor (and a threat from Rodrigo) convinced him to help.
  • They road back to Kara and Deandra, and then retreated to town after stabilizing the young agent-in-training.
  • Back in town, Mr. Speakman passed word about Dusky Jewel. Col. Custer sent his men to investigate and word came back the town had been taken control of and shut down. Mr. Speakman managed to keep the posse's names out of the news.
  • The posse decided to take a nice, long rest to recover from their injuries.
  • Meanwhile, word began to spread about folks going missing in Chinatown. Soon after, some folks went missing from tent city as well.
  • A young woman named Linda Connor came to visit Deandra. She told the posse her husband, Henrik Connor, had gone missing and Charley Bull had told her to find Deandra.
  • The posse worked tent city and learned about several more folks who had gone missing. One of the victims' wives, Mrs. Genevieve, informed the posse she didn't know who took her husband, Rupert, but she had seen his husband talking to a Mexican businessman named Alonzo. Alonzo was new in town and he had already made some wealthy friends despite no one knowing what kind of work he did.
  • Rodrigo wandered the town drunkenly asking for Alonzo until a Union soldier pointed him towards Nuttal & Mann's No. 10 Saloon.

  • In the saloon, the posse argued with the bartender a bit and eventually found Alonzo sitting with Mr. Styles and his hired goons. The posse tried to parley but Mr. Styles was only interested in a good fight. The rest of the saloon patrons fled as both sides opened fire.
  • With only a few scrapes, the posse dropped all of Styles' hired guns and the businessman surrendered while Alonzo tried to run, but he could not escape.

Tango with the Dead
Session 5
  • Rodrigo led his pursuers on a mad dash through Deadwood and managed to escape them with only a level of exhaustion. Back at the boarding house, the posse bandaged themselves up but decided to lay low while their wounds healed. Over the next five days, they rested and perused the Pinkerton files which provided a wealth of information about the Weird West and its inhabitants. Deandra mulled over the files and decided to keep them for now.
  • As they prepared to leave the boarding house, there was a knock on their door. Rodrigo answered and met Agent Simon McCoy, who asked to see Deandra. Agent McCoy provided his credentials and explained he had been assigned to complete her training as an Agent. His naivety got the best of him and he offended Kara, but he convinced the posse his intentions aligned with theirs. The group went to the edge of town (after passing the Union forces) and Agent McCoy set up a temporary shooting range to see what the posse could do. They impressed him with their shooting skills, and the group set off to head to Blount's Claim.
  • The sky opened up and poured rain down upon the posse. As they entered the edge of the Black Hills, they happened upon the remains of miners and soldiers who had crossed the Sioux and come to an awful end on poles alongside the road. The site was unsettling but no one lost their lunch.
  • Just as they were about to pass, two of the corpses leaped from the poles and attacked. The posse protected each other as the corpses took turns trying to lash them up to poles to die (catching Kara, Rodrigo, and Deandra each in turn, but each escaped their grasp). The posse quickly realized they couldn't hurt the critters (only because their dice went insanely cold, and one of Rodrigo's colts blew up in his hand) and they learned their lesson last session. Agent McCoy turned on the closest pole man and blasted it with his gatling pistol and turned it into Swiss cheese, giving Rodrigo an opening to finish it off. They beat a hasty retreat and managed to escape the last of the pole men.

  • Soon after, they reached Wallace Blount's claim and the place was a bloody mess, but they weren't fooled. Despite the blood everywhere, there were no signs of a struggle or gunfire. Inside a shed, they found a miner who was not Wallace (whose name they never got). He seemed determined to lie to them, but Rodrigo convinced him that wasn't in his best interests/ The miner told them Wallace had witnessed a deal going down between Kang's Chinese enforcers and a band of Sioux (Kara was not happy to hear this). Wallace has left for a place called Dusky Jewel to investigate further, although the miner was convinced the place didn't really exist. The posse allowed the miner to go in peace and set out to see if the Dusky Jewel was real or not.
  • After several hours ride, the rain let up and they found themselves south of the Black Hills and heading east. In the distance, they spotted a large mining camp and even more interesting, they spotted a band of Indians spying on the camp. Kara recognized them as Hunkpapa (Lakota) and the posse approached the warband with caution.
  • The leader of the Hunkpapa motioned for the posse to keep a safe distance. Although he recognized Kara as Sioux, he did not trust the rest of the posse. The posse learned the camp in the distance was being run by the Chinese (most likely one of Kang's operations), and had been set up illegally (the reason it was not known by most folks). The Hunkpapa advised caution to the posse who were determined to go to the camp to find Wallace. The groups went their separate ways in peace.

  • Approaching Dusky Jewel, the posse decided they wanted to sneak into the camp and Kara was adamant they do as much damage as they could as well. They lacked the weapons (or numbers) to take out the camp, but a mining camp is bound to have explosives, so they decided to search for that as well as Wallace.
  • Along the creek, they found an opening in the wall and swam into the camp. Stealthily, they made their way through town and found a storage building. Inside, Rodrigo knocked out a pair of Chinese workers and they found a case of dynamite, which they divided amongst themselves (giving some to Agent McCoy when he assured them he was not against damaging Kang's operations as well).
  • Leaving the storage building, Kara spotted a white man hanging from a pole near the gallows at the center of town. She snuck to the gallows and confirmed her suspicion it was Wallace, dead. She quickly retreated to the posse when another worker came around a corner and spotted them. He yelled for the alarm and Rodrigo shot him square between the eyes. Dusky Jewel came to life around them.

Great session! We had a great time and the posse has a mess of trouble to deal with next session.

The Chinese Connection
Session 4
  • Deandra and Kara retreated to Nuttal and Manis' Tavern for nachos, shots, and some conversation. The game session began with a reading of the dialogue in which they got to know each other a bit better.
  • The next morning the trio debated traveling to Blount's Claim to check on the miner but instead decided to stick to the case of the missing files. At the Iron Dragon Depot, they learned the Chinese man who had been killed was named Chen Wa.
  • From there, they ventured into Deadwood's Chinatown to learn more about Chen Wa but their inquiry drew the attention of Wang Fu, who had been assigned by the Iron Dragon to investigate Chen Wa's death. He immediately suspected the posse to be the killers.
  • Deandra took a chance with the elderly Chinese man and revealed she worked for The Agency and showed him how to identify items that belonged to her organization. Once the information was revealed, Wang Fu revealed his true colors and his minions attacked.

  • The posse mowed down the martial arts minions, but Wang Fu proved to be a much greater threat. As the battle drew on, Wang Fu realized he could not win the fight and he fled.
  • The encounter was brief but it revealed the Iron Dragon were interested in the files and did not possess them. So the posse went back to the Iron Dragon Depot to see if the rest of the files had been left behind by Chen Wa.
  • They searched the depot while keeping themselves inconspicuous and found a crate with the remaining files. Rodrigo kept watch while the ladies unloaded the contents of the crate into Kara's bags. Rodrigo spotted someone keeping an eye on them and he confronted the man, making a spectacle of himself. The man fled while Rodrigo did his best to draw attention to the both of them.
  • As the man rode away on his horse, Rodrigo was distracted by a group of Indians crawling across the rooftops along main street. He waved to them and they disappeared from view.
  • The posse was in route to the boarding house when a pair of deputies (Deputies Anderson and Gallows) confronted them. They said they were investigating the murder of Chen Wa and they had been given a description of three people who matched the posse.
  • At the same time, a businessman named Allen Neal Jones Styles and several gunmen approached from behind the posse. Mr. Styles accused the posse of stealing his property from the depot and insisted the deputies arrest them and return what was rightfully his.
  • They sparred verbally for a bit and it got ugly fast. Frustrated, the deputies grabbed Kara and tried to take her bags by force. A gunfight ensued!
  • Mr. Styles and most of his gunmen took cover immediately while the posse's attention was on the deputies. Deputy Gallows was promptly shot and gutted, bringing his career as a lawman (and his life) to an end. Kara stabbed Deputy Anderson and he retreated to shoot from cover.
  • The posse's enemies were split across both sides of the street which put them at a tactical disadvantage. While the posse attacked along the north side of the street, they were easy targets for those taking cover on the south side. Deputy Anderson kept retreating, and eventually, the villains began to get the best of the posse.

Marshal's Note: It was about to be a TPK, so I encouraged the players to consider retreating. You can't win every fight.

  • Rodrigo ran to Kara and grabbed one of her bags, making a big ado about taking the files from her. He then ran one direction while Deandra and Kara retreated another (with the files safely in the bag Kara still held). Mr. Styles yelled for Deputy Anderson to get reinforcements while they began chasing Rodrigo through the streets of Deadwood.

Was Mr. Styles tricked by Rodrigo's subterfuge? Can the Mexican Blade escape to fight another day? What will Deandra and Kara do with the files?

Welcome to Deadwood!
Session 3
  • The posse sat down with Wovoka and he told them about the Ghost Dance. He suggested they look for someone named Charley Bull in Deadwood if they want to help more. Wovoka and the Ghost Dancers left to take their fallen to the hunting grounds.
  • The posse returned to the stagecoach, they found Jeb and Big Dany McKeever have finished repairs and the train is gone. The group continued on to Deadwood and arrived just ahead of a large force of Union soldiers. Rodrigo urged Jeb to bypass the soldiers (considering his shady past) and a small group followed them into town to question them.

  • They ducked into the Mint Gambling Saloon where Kitty Leroy had just finished one of her performances. The bartender gave Rodrigo a bit of grief, but when Kitty heard Rodrigo's name, he told her barman to serve up the drinks. Rodrigo then sat down for some gambling while Kara kept to herself and Deandra stayed close to her charge. Working the gamblers a bit, they learn that Charley Bull can normally be found at the Langrishe Theater in the evening. Rodrigo left to draw away the Union soldiers looking for him, while the ladies went on to the theater.
  • Deandra and Kara found Charley Bull (as well as a tough crowd) and learned he had already heard they had helped Wovoka. Apparently, word travels fast in Deadwood. He told them about his missing friend, Wallace Blount, and asked them to help look for him. The ladies agreed.
  • Meanwhile, Rodrigo was caught in an alley by the Union soldiers and they kicked the crud out of him. Bruised and bleeding, he went to the theater to find Deandra and Kara. If they noticed his wounds, they ignored them.
  • Rodrigo wandered off again while Deandra and Kara went to the Black Hill's Miner's Supply. Deandra, an Agent in training, had orders to report to Richard Speakman when she arrived in Deadwood. Mr. Speakman was a bit on the grouchy side but he welcomed Deandra and gave her her instructions for her time in Deadwood. He was not happy to hear Rodrigo "Six Feet Under" Sanchez was in Deadwood, and he reiterated her standing orders to keep an eye on him. He also mentioned there were rumors than some of Detective Pinkerton's infamous "missing files" may have shown up in Deadwood and to keep her ears open for any information.
  • The two ladies went to the famous Grand Central Hotel but were turned away. Lt Col. Custer had commandeered the hotel and there was no room for anyone besides his officers. Instead, they found a small boarding house on the edge of town and rented a room.
  • Evening set in while they looked for Rodrigo and they found him near the Iron Dragon Depot just in time to witness a murder! A Chinese man ran out of the depot and was shot by a mystery man who disappeared before he could be identified. The street filled with gawkers, but no one would lift a finger to help and Kara got into a verbal confrontation with a self-righteous woman who did not like Kara's suggestion to burn the corpse.
  • Just before Kara douses the body in flames, Deandra noticed the Chinese man held a file folder with the tell-tale signs of bring Agency property. She intervened just long enough to grab the file.
  • They retreated to the boarding house. Kara and Rodrigo got drunk while Deandra read the files which was a series of top secret documents detailing the Robber Prince, Sam Bass (who the posse had sent to meet his maker the day before).
  • In the morning, Kara gave Rodrigo enough alcohol to knock himself out (yeah, right) and the ladies returned to report to Richard Speakman about the shooting. Deandra turned the file on Sam Bass over to him and updated him on the villain's fate. Mr. Speakman praised their work and asked Deandra to keep looking into the issue. Meanwhile, a drunk Rodrigo went wandering.
  • On the way back to the boarding house, the ladies found Rodrigo drunk in the street talking to strangers who were not thrilled with the encounter. A gunman with a red bandana covering his face confronted Rodrigo. He apparently knew the Mexican Blade and accused him of defiling their order and stealing their secrets. Rodrigo could not remember what the man was talking about, but was pretty sure he was actually guilty (because that is totally something he would do).
  • The gunman kicked Rodrigo through the window of the Stebbins & Post Bank and followed him inside to finish him off. Deandra and Kara quickly followed. Against the three of them, the gunman did not stand a chance and Kara finished him off with a shot in the back. Trouble really did follow Rodrigo wherever he went.
  • They went back to the boarding house to collect themselves and discuss their next plan of action. Find the missing Agency documents? Go looking for Wallace Blount? Keep Rodrigo alive? It was just their first day in town and already things were getting messy.
Saving Wovoka
Session 2

This was a short session due to circumstances outside our control.

  • The posse rushed to Sky Hawk's side and realized he was not dead, only unconscious. No one was trained in medicine but they managed to stabilize his wounds and tend to their own.
  • After a short rest, the posse walked several miles to find Sky Hawk's allies. They found Wovoka, a pair of Ghost Dancers, and a pair of Paiute braves surrounded by another group of Sioux. Kara could not identify their tribe.

  • The posse and Sky Hawk rushed into battle, splitting themselves up to face the surrounding foes. Rodrigo moved south and opened fire on the enemies closing from the south. Deandra moved north with Sky Hawk at her side. Kara drew her bow and began shooting at the enemies on the far side of the stream. Wovoka and the Ghost Dancers are pacifists and would not attack but they called upon the spirits to bolster the defenses of the people who came to save them.
  • Wovoka called the attackers Ravenites as he took cover with the Ghost Dancers. Their leader, Hoarse From Roaring, struck down one of the Paiute braves who challenged him and then took cover behind rocks to shoot at Rodrigo. Kara snuck around the back sides of the rocks to shoot at him with her bow. Rodrigo, Deandra, and Sky Hawk focuses on the Ravenite braves to eliminate that threat.
  • Hoarse From Roaring turned on Kara and blasted her with his rifle. It might have been the end of our hero, had she not rolled an incredible multi-Ace soak roll. Wovoka rushed from cover to call upon the spirits to heal her wounds so she could continue fighting.
  • The group collapsed on Hoarse From Roaring, and as is appropriate after the hit she took, Kara landed the killing blow against the Ravenite warrior.

Marshal's Notes
Like I said, it was a short session, but we had fun and we are looking forward to next session when the posse will finally start learning about what is going on in Sioux territory.

The White Calf
Session 1
  • Deandra Harte, Kara, and Rodrigo Sanchez are traveling via stagecoach to the town of Deadwood when they are ambushed by the Sam Bass Gang. The posse quickly dispatched the outlaws.

  • Keb McKeever, their driver, told them it would take 8 hours to fix the stagecoach, so they settled in for the night.
  • The posse spots strange lights in the distance and identified them as a train which comes to a stop not far away. They decided to investigate.
  • At the train, they found Iron Dragon workers and muscle unloading weapons, ammo, and gunpowder. They suspected the Iron Dragon were up to no good. Kara started the attack with a well-aimed shot which hit one of the barrels of gunpowder. BOOM! Rodrigo and Deandra circled around to flank the Iron Dragon and after a tough fight, the Iron Dragon were defeated.
  • They interrogated one of the survivors and learned the weapons were for Chief Sitting Bull and his braves. Kara was infuriated by the idea and had to be calmed down by Deandra and Rodrigo.

  • Before they left the train, an injured Paiute brave arrived and fell from his horse. He told them his name was Sky Hawk and he had been injured when his group was attacked by another tribe of Indians. He begged the posse to help him and someone named Wovoka, who was still with the group. The posse agreed to help.
  • In route to help Sky Hawk's allies, the posse is attacked by a pair of Devil Bats. Sky Hawk was killed by the Devil Bats before the posse could destroy them.

  • The session ended. Deandra and Kara earned 3 XP. Rodrigo earned 2 XP.
